On this page, we have collected frequently asked questions and answers concerning
our forwarding services. Additional and more specific topics can be found on
the special pages that deal with every single top level domain.
Using WWW forwardings is always useful if a subdirectory of a
website shall appear as an independent site. The Usage of subdirectories
for websites can often be found at free or already existing web spaces
(GeoCities, Tripod, AOL, T-Online and so on).
If the existing website has an IP-address of its own, it is a good idea to
enter it in your new domain's name server. If you wish, Knipp can operate the
name server and manages the necessary entries, without any additional costs.
There are two technical realizations:
the HTTP redirect and the Frameset method.
In the first variant, the browser is told a new URL
that shall be used to receive the content data.
In the second method, our WWW forwarding service generates
a frameset with one single Frame, with the URL pointing to the
actual site. The WWW forwarding supports both variants.
The second one is being used by default.
From a technical point of view, the first method is more sophisticated.
However, the new domain name will disappear from the location bar of
commonly used browsers. The frameset method leaves the
entered URL unchanged, but even if you jump to subpages or foreign sites.
Further problems may arise with pages containing JavaScript that try to
access the outmost frame (= window).
No, that is normally not necessary. You should try to avoid the new domain
name in links to internal resources, i.e. to use relative links instead of
absolute URLs. If you want to link any external pages that shall be
displayed in the same window, use the attribute »target=_top« for the
corresponding invocations in order to avoid that your site's title keeps being
displayed.
There is a robot that reads the corresponding data from your homepage
every 14 days and updates our database accordingly. So it is sufficient to
modify your home page; the changes will then automatically be carried out
here at Knipp.
Yes, of course. Specific mechanisms make sure that the established search engines
incorporate the home page and all subpages with the new name.
If you should experience problems with new search engines, please inform
our support team.
Yes. If desired, every incoming e-mail will be sent to the e-mail account that was specified
in the domain application. The mail forwarding itself is not a POP3 account, however.
As many as you want. By default, every mail that is addressed to your domain
(independently of whether the username actually exists) will be sent to the
e-mail address specified in the domain application.
For example »Smith@your-company.net«, »Jones@your-company.net«,
»info@your-company.net«, or »Howard.TheChief@your-company.net«.
Yes. That is especially useful if your domain name is used in the
forged sender addresses of spam mails, since it helps to keep your
mailbox clean of the returning mails with invalid recipient addresses.
In order to stop the forwarding of e-mails with recipient addresses that
you haven't explicitly specified, simply go to the modify command in the
domain section of the DRS and delete the e-mail address in the
»Default destination«-field (in Expert mode).
Sending e-mails is independent of receiving e-mails and thus independent
of our e-mail forwarding. With every modern e-mail client, it is possible
to define the visible sender by yourself, e.g. to set it to
»Jones@your-company.net«.
