There are a number of basic restrictions concerning the domain names that
may be registered below certain top level or second level domains.
The following overview is merely an abstract that shall give you an idea
of which names are usually not allowed.
The overview is not exhaustive, and the restrictions described may not be
in effect for every ccTLD.
Possibly forbidden domain names
Names which consist of two characters only
Names that conatin local language characters (allowed for some
ccTLDs)
Names of existing top level domains
Geographical names (i.e. names of countries, states, provinces, towns, etc.)
of the respective country
Names which consist of trade marks that are registered in the
respective country, unless the designated domain holder is the
holder of the trade mark himself
Terms, which are considerd as offensive in the respective country
Next to the restrictions listed above, which are based on administrative
decisions, there are more, which are normally justified technically or
organizational.
Among them are restrictions cencerning the length of the domain name (often 63
characters, sometimes even less) and the prohibition of the usage of certain
characters at particular positions of the domain name.
For example, it is usually forbidden to register a domain name beginning
or ending with the character “-”.
