In the beginning of the internet era, .org domains have been intended for
non-profit organizations. Greenpeace and the Red Cross are typical holders
of .org domain. Meanwhile, there are more than ten million
.org domains (as of December 2020).
There have never been any verifications concerning the non-commercial character
of the usage of the domains. Very often, .org domains are being used alternatively
if the requested domain name is not avaiable under the .com top level domain.

Since 15.01.2005, the registration of internationalized
domain names ( IDNs) for .org domains is possible.
This allows for the registration of domain names that contain
umlaut characters, such as »müller.org« for example.
