.biz means business

The increasing congestion in the .com name space makes it nearly impossible to register domains for commercial usage. Almost every interesting domain name is already taken.
Based on this fact, ICANN introduced this alternative top level domain for commerical usage in December 2000. And the high number of registrations (ca. 1.2 million .biz domains as of April 2024) proves that this was the right step to take.
Since October 12th, 2004, it is also possible to register .biz domains with Internationalized Domain Names (IDN). This means .biz domain names may contain umlaut characters, like in “börse.biz”, for example.
