This page presents some frequently asked questions and answers
concerning .name domains.
Besides the information offered here, we have a list
of general questions
and answers about the domain system, which is worth reading
and well-suited to impart a solid basic understanding for this topic.
As opposed to conventional domains, .name domains often consist
of three parts: first name, last name and the character
string name, with a dot
separating these parts from each other.
Example: jane.jones.name.
Since January 14th, 2004, it is also possible to register .name domains
which consist of only two parts (so-called second level domains),
like depp.name.
But only if depp isn't already used
in other registrations like
johnny.depp.name.
Yes. Trademarks can be registered, but it is also possible to block
their registration. However, persons take priority over trademarks.
That means that the person Ronald McDonald
could annul the blockade by the fast food company and register the
domain ronald.mcdonald.name.
No. Domain names can only be transferred if the designated new holder of
the domain has the same name. Jane Jones cannot transfer her domain name
jane.jones.name to Jacky Jones.
Exception: If the present and the new registrant do coincidentally have
the same name. In this case, a transfer is possible.
Since November 8, 2009, it is possible to use umlauts in the domain
names. The name Albrecht Dürer, for
example, does no longer have to be converted to
albrecht.duerer.name in order to form a
valid domain name.
In addition to this, there are further
exceptions, i.e. terms that may
not be registered.
Yes. For example, you may register
jane.jones.name,
cutie.jones.name (term of endearment),
j.jones.name (abbreviation of the first
name) and biker.babe.name (nickname in
motorcycle club).
Yes. For third level domain names like
jane.jones.name, e-mail addresses of the form
jane@jones.name can be obtained for an
additional fee.
The @ character replaces the first dot in the domain name.
People often favor short e-mail addresses because they are easier to
memorize.
Second level domain names include e-mail addresses of the form
johnny@depp.name or
me@depp.name free of charge.
As a precondition, you must have a functioning e-mail address.
When ordering the e-mail service for your .name domain you
have to provide an existing e-mail address to which the e-mails
shall be forwarded. For example, all the e-mails
to jane@jones.name could be forwareded
to 987654321@compuserve.com.
You can then receive the e-mails by using your compuserve account.
