In order to register a .museum domain, you need a so-called “Membership-ID”
and the matching password. If you should not have one by now, you
can apply for
it here.
The allocation policy of .museum domains is administered by the organization
“MuseDoma”. Only organizations, societies, and natural persons
as defined by the ICOM
(International Council of Museums) are eligible for registration.
In short, you can say that nearly any museum meets the conditions and
therefore the regulations do not further restrict the registration for museums.
You can find further details
on MuseDoma's web site.
Domain names
.museum domains often consist of at least three character strings. It is
possible to use more than three, but short names are usually favored. The
structure is based on this scheme:
specific.general.museum
According to this scheme domain names usually look like this:
minneapolis.institute.arts.museum
nickle.arts.museum
pamplinhistoricalpark.civilwar.museum
bnhm.berkeley.museum
naturalhistory.london.museum
computerhistory.virtual.museum
Domain names consisting of only two character strings are also possible, but
will require that the second level domain matches the museum's known name or
well-known abbreviation and the second level domain must not consist of a
generic name.
The principles and regulations are available on the web site of
MuseDoma.
The registration is very easy. It will not be processed automatically,
but you can complete the E-mail application form and send it to
support@knipp.de.
We will contact you and report about the registration process.
Each registration is valid for two years and will be renewed automatically
for another two years. The costs are provided in our
price list.
